Forest Preserve District of Cook County-Busse Woods

Flooding, erosion control, and urban recreation needs have helped create a 3700 acre public preserve in a metropolitan region containing over seven and one half million people.   Busse Woods provides both recreational benefits and flood control for a large population, and is the best used site in the forest preserve system.  Ongoing studies conducted by the United States Forest Service indicate that 2.5 million people visit this site each year, compared to 2.2 million at Yellowstone, and 3.2 million at Yosemite in 1988.

Recreational facility construction plans were prepared by the agency’s landscape architects, architects, and engineers.  The landscape architect’s main objective was to balance preservation of the natural setting and existing resources with the introduction of recreational facilities.  The project is unique in that the site is an island of open space completely surrounded by urban development.  In addition to it’s scenic wooded acreage, Busse Woods also includes boat launch ramps, docks, rental facilities, 22 picnic shelters, 20 comfort stations, 6 fishing walls, twelve miles of bicycle trails, and parking for 5,000 vehicles.
