Envisioning a new urban-ecological model for river edge parks, the master plan for Aurora’s Park 49 transforms an existing site of unrealized potential into a place world-recognized for its use of contemporary innovative design, local history, facilitation of community needs, performance spaces and ecological life along the Fox River.
A water-dependent park, all constructed environments, views, access points, architectural and natural forms will be related to flows, seasonal changes in the river and movements in the floodplain and its source upstream. Forming a gateway from the city to the river, an amphitheater delicately complements the landscape with lightweight structure, sculpture and play with light. Restoration of sections along the west bank shoreline across the river from the amphitheater will increase biodiversity and establish two natural green banks as a signature to the park’s natural northern end. Natural plantings will cleanse stormwater runoff prior to river entry. The centerpiece of the park is a Pedestrian Suspension Bridge which crosses the river, connecting the neighborhoods east and west, at the midpoint of the park. The bridge creates a memorable arching form, which embraces the river while affording panoramic views of the park, city and river activities.
