Planning & Analysis

For this planning project, the landscape architect takes readers "on a walk through Downtown Aurora 2015," the firm’s vision of a revitalized, hospitable and growing city center. Building on the City of Aurora’s core strengths—its riverfront, green spaces, infrastructure and overall diversity—the master plan depicts a thriving, hospitable, mixed-urban centerpiece to energize the entire city.

A public-private partnership commissioned the development initiative, "Seize the Future," to entice private investment. The landscape architect leveraged local research, including stakeholder input sessions, to build a long-term vision for Aurora’s neighborhoods. Each district is centered on a public park, which serve as catalysts for attracting people and, as a result, new retail and residential activity.

In a unique twist, the plan documents were cast as a marketing device, written to influence real estate professionals. Visionary text, splashy graphics and evocative pull quotes transport the reader to the Aurora envisioned for 2015. Photographs of existing conditions are paired with sketches of the same vistas after realization. The implementation methods urged in the plan not only transcend promotion, but also stand to influence the subject city’s social, economic and environmental sustainability.
