The Public Recognition Award honors members of the community who have promoted, enhanced or strengthened the public awareness and perception of the profession of landscape architecture in Illinois.
This year, the recipient of the Public Recognition Award is HomeTown Aurora, a unique 173-acre, 1,288-home community located in Aurora, Illinois. Now in its seventh year, HomeTown emerged from the vision of Bigelow Homes, "to respect and value people, foster interdependent relationships and respect and care for the natural environment." Bigelow Homes created HomeTown based on the design philosophy of Co-housing, which emphasizes building communities that have "mini-neighborhoods," each with a community green space – a Living Court – surrounded by twelve to sixteen single-family residences. In HomeTown, each Living Court is designed to foster interaction among neighbors, create safe play areas for children and protect the land. Today, HomeTown has a popular café and general store, and soon a new town center with a post office, church, day-care center and barber shop will open.
Reflecting on his interest in recreating the tradition of great American neighborhoods, Perry Bigelow of Bigelow Homes said: "Our definition of neighborhood is the experience of living in a connected community, having as much privacy as desired, yet also the ability for the first time since World War II to live in a community designed to encourage people to live out their humanity."
