With only 800 square feet of space to work with, the landscape architects were challenged to design a show-case city garden. Using the latest in horticultural products, methods, materials and design, the firm also sought to create an intimate space for its client by assuring the garden’s privacy and creating visual excitement.
Upon selecting the final concept for the project, the landscape architect and client finalized the master plan by focusing on hardscape, woodwork and plant selection. The hardscape components of the garden consist of a patio space and seat/retention walls. The blue, rust and lilac tones of the hardscape complement the existing surroundings, including the house. An expansive deck made of clear cedar and treated pine provides space for entertainment, cooking and lounging. The dramatic pergola attached to the second floor deck creates a connection between all of the hardscape and planting materials.
The landscape designer chose all plants in accordance with the client’s criteria: plants were selected to provide color, fragrance, hardiness and seasonal variety. An existing crabapple tree only needed pruning and now anchors the design and provides shelter.
Additional features of this stunning garden include a water spa, a micro-irrigation system, low-voltage lighting and multiple built-in planters. Dramatic and colorful, this achieves a sense of privacy and intimacy; however, it is also a place where the client can entertain large groups of people. With a budget of approximately eighty thousand dollars, the landscape architect is planning to complete the project by installing a veneered bluestone pathway to the back alley. As intended, the landscape architect has created a truly beautiful showcase garden.
