The Flossmoor Garden and Sculpture Park was created to showcase fine artworks to educate and entertain the public. Formerly a green traffic island, the site has been transformed from a road into an 'art park' with powerful sculptures and beautiful gardens. The garden and sculpture walk is the centerpiece of the public art program of the Village of Flossmoor.
The landscape architect is credited with creating the winning concept for the park - closing a rarely used street and connecting it to the traffic island to create a more unified and safer environment for children. As lead consultant to the Village, the landscape architect directed the team of engineers and a horticulturist in this unusual transformation.
This project had special challenges because whereas most sculpture gardens are designed for specific pieces of art, this garden required planning for both current and future exhibits. The Flossmoor Garden and Sculpture Park is particularly unique because it includes sculpture leased from the Pier Walk at Navy Pier with an option to purchase. Flossmoor's innovative sculpture garden has become a model for other communities in the Chicago region.
