The Kishwaukee River is one of the only remaining Class A (exceptionally high quality) streams in Illinois. The project corridor, which contains the headwaters of the Kishwaukee River, lies on the edge of the suburban growth currently expanding north and west from the Chicago metropolitan region at a startling rate. Illinois State Route 47, a strategic regional arterial that bisects the corridor from north to south, is slated for expansion in response to the region's rapid growth.
The goal of this project was to use a series of innovative public participation techniques to engage a wide range of individuals in developing a Conservation-Based Land Use and Transportation Plan. An additional goal was to ensure that this inter-governmental Land Use and Transportation Plan would be adopted by all the participating agencies.
The landscape architect led a design team who collaborated with a diverse group of people. The team facilitated each component of the planning and design process as well as the impact analyses, educational outreach, and the final adoption of the plan by municipal and county leaders.
This plan is just the first step in the ongoing process of transforming the project corridor into a sustainable growth area.
