Building for the seventh generation is the mantra of Dunes Country at Furnessville. Located on 181 acres next to the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore, it was designed for the long haul as a sustainable community to capture the distinct cultural flavor of the area and preserve the fragile dune ecology for future generations. Integrating neo-traditional planning and the latest in green building technology, the design takes a sustainable approach to stormwater management with infiltration basins, bioswales, pervious pavement, and slot curbs. The design makes careful provision for human needs as well with pedestrian oriented traffic flow, proximity to Chicago-bound commuter trains, and an abundance of natural places for residents to explore. Flexible enough to incorporate the goals and dreams of the people who will call this affordable living environment home, Dunes Country is restrictive in ways that are critical to its long-term value and sustainability. Featuring restored remnant dunes, 100-year-old oaks, wetlands, and prairie created from local native vegetation, Dunes Country will prove a responsible steward for the historical legacy of the area’s early settlers. |
